Itinerary
Day 1 Explore the History and Scenic Beauty of Southern Lake Biwa
Starting in southern Lake Biwa, spend the day cycling north along the lakeshore, visiting historic temples and landmarks along the way. Take in the open lakeside scenery while enjoying Shiga’s culture and cuisine, and experience the beauty of Biwaichi at a relaxed pace.
Otsu Port — Biwaichi Bike
A hub for cyclists exploring Lake Biwa by bike. In addition to bike rentals and pre-ride maintenance, the team offers route guidance, recommendations for local highlights, and advice on all things Biwaichi. Biwaichi souvenirs and commemorative goods are also available.

Ishiyamadera Temple
Founded in the Nara period, Ishiyamadera Temple is one of the most historic temples along Lake Biwa. Its main hall stands on a massive wollastonite rock formation, which gave the temple its name. The temple is also closely associated with Murasaki Shikibu, author of *The Tale of Genji*, and is featured in several works of classical Japanese literature. Surrounded by nature, it offers a beautiful blend of history, architecture, and scenery.

Seta no Karahashi Bridge
A historic bridge spanning the Seta River, the only river that flows out of Lake Biwa. It has long served as an important crossing on the Tokaido route and is considered one of Japan’s Three Great Bridges. Rebuilt many times over the centuries, the bridge continues to be an enduring landmark of Shiga.

Karasuma Peninsula
A peninsula extending into Lake Biwa, home to attractions including the Lake Biwa Museum, which explores the relationship between the lake and people, and the Kusatsu Aquatic Plant Park Mizunomori, where visitors can discover a variety of aquatic plants.

BIWAKO Monument
A large “BIWAKO” monument located along the shore of Lake Biwa. It is a popular photo spot for cyclists taking on the Biwaichi route.

Chomeiji Temple
A historic Tendai Buddhist temple set on the mountainside overlooking Lake Biwa. After climbing 808 stone steps, visitors are rewarded with the temple’s beautiful main hall and sweeping views of the lake. Long revered as a temple for prayers for longevity, Chomeiji Temple remains a popular destination for visitors.

La Collina Omihachiman
The flagship destination of Taneya, one of Shiga’s most renowned confectionery brands. Set within an expansive landscape of grass-covered buildings and lush greenery, La Collina Omihachiman offers a unique harmony of architecture and nature. Day 2 Discover the History of Shiga’s Castle Towns
A day exploring some of Shiga’s most significant historic sites, including the National Treasure Hikone Castle and the former site of Nagahama Castle. Enjoy the atmosphere of historic castle towns and scenic lakeside views while discovering the distinctive culinary traditions of northern Shiga. After cycling, unwind and soothe tired muscles at a lakeside hot spring ryokan overlooking Lake Biwa.
Hikone Castle
Built in the early 17th century, Hikone Castle is a designated National Treasure of Japan. Its original keep has survived from the Edo period and stands on a hill overlooking Lake Biwa. Historic buildings and gardens remain within the grounds, offering a glimpse into the architecture and atmosphere of a traditional Japanese castle.

Nagahama Castle History Museum
A history museum built on the site of Nagahama Castle, which was constructed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Through historical materials and exhibitions, the museum explores the history of the castle and Hideyoshi’s connection to Nagahama. The observation deck on the top floor offers panoramic views of Nagahama and Lake Biwa.

Day 3 Northern Lake Biwa’s Natural Beauty and Scenic Views
Spend the day immersed in the majestic natural beauty of northern Lake Biwa. Enjoy panoramic views of Lake Biwa and Lake Yogo from Mount Shizugatake, then cycle along the scenic shores of Kaizu-Osaki, where the lake meets the surrounding mountains. Take in the peaceful landscapes of the Kohoku area and discover another side of Lake Biwa along the way.
Mount Shizugatake
A scenic viewpoint overlooking Lake Biwa and Lake Yogo. Known as the site of the historic Battle of Shizugatake during Japan’s Sengoku period, the mountain offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty. From the summit, enjoy sweeping views of Lake Biwa, reached by a scenic chairlift.

Kaizu Osaki Lakeside Park
A lakeside park in the northwestern part of Lake Biwa, known for its beautiful natural surroundings. A row of cherry trees stretches for approximately 4 km along the lakeshore, making it a popular destination in spring. The scenic views of the lake and surrounding mountains also make it an ideal spot for cycling.

Day 4 The Mystique of Lake Biwa
On the final day of the tour, immerse yourself in the scenery, history, and spiritual heritage of Lake Biwa. Take a boat to Chikubushima, a mystical island home to National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. Continue to Shirahige Shrine, renowned for its iconic torii gate standing in the lake. Take in one of Lake Biwa’s most emblematic views as you bring your cycling journey through Shiga to a memorable close.
Chikubu Island
An island steeped in history and spiritual tradition, floating in the waters of Lake Biwa. Chikubushima is home to Hogon-ji Temple and Tsukubusuma Shrine and has long been revered as a sacred place where Buddhist and Shinto traditions meet. With National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties preserved on the island, it offers a unique opportunity to experience Shiga’s history and culture amid the beautiful scenery of Lake Biwa.

Shirahige Shrine
One of Japan’s oldest shrines, with a history spanning approximately 2,000 years, Shirahige Shrine is renowned for its iconic torii gate standing in the waters of Lake Biwa. Considered the head shrine of the many Shirahige Shrines across Japan, it is revered as a place to pray for longevity and good fortune in relationships. The striking view of the torii rising from the lake is one of Lake Biwa’s most iconic landscapes.

From spring to early summer and from autumn through winter, mild temperatures make for comfortable cycling.
From July to August, temperatures can be high, and longer rides require greater physical endurance, so precautions against the heat are recommended.
From late December to February, snowfall and icy road conditions may affect cycling, particularly in northern areas.
