Itinerary
Day 1 Explore the History and Lakeshores of Southern Lake Biwa
Starting from Otsu Port, the starting point of the Biwaichi route, spend the day cycling north along the lakeshore while discovering the history and culture of southern Lake Biwa. Visit some of Shiga’s most iconic landmarks, including Ishiyamadera Temple, Seta no Karahashi Bridge, and the Lake Biwa Museum. At Ukimido, a temple hall seemingly floating on the lake, take in the tranquil scenery of Lake Biwa. This cycling route offers a chance to experience the landscapes that capture the essence of Shiga, where history and nature come together.
Otsu Port — Biwaichi Bike
A hub for cyclists exploring Lake Biwa by bike. In addition to bike rentals and pre-ride maintenance, the team offers route guidance, recommendations for local highlights, and advice on all things Biwaichi. Biwaichi souvenirs and commemorative goods are also available.
Ishiyamadera Temple
Founded in the Nara period, Ishiyamadera Temple is one of the most historic temples along Lake Biwa. Its main hall stands on a massive wollastonite rock formation, which gave the temple its name. The temple is also closely associated with Murasaki Shikibu, author of *The Tale of Genji*, and is featured in several works of classical Japanese literature. Surrounded by nature, it offers a beautiful blend of history, architecture, and scenery.
Seta no Karahashi Bridge
A historic bridge spanning the Seta River, the only river that flows out of Lake Biwa. It has long served as an important crossing on the Tokaido route and is considered one of Japan’s Three Great Bridges. Rebuilt many times over the centuries, the bridge continues to be an enduring landmark of Shiga.
Karasuma Peninsula
A peninsula extending into Lake Biwa, home to attractions including the Lake Biwa Museum, which explores the relationship between the lake and people, and the Kusatsu Aquatic Plant Park Mizunomori, where visitors can discover a variety of aquatic plants.

Mangetsuji Temple (Ukimido)
A serene lakeside temple extending out over Lake Biwa. Built during the Heian period, it was established as a place to pray for safety on the lake and peace for the people. Its graceful structure appears to float on the water, offering beautiful views of the tranquil lake.

Day 2 From Omihachiman to Hikone on a Journey of History and Culinary Delights
Starting in the atmospheric streets of Omihachiman, spend the day traveling to Hikone while enjoying history and culinary delights. Stroll along Hachiman-bori Canal, where the atmosphere of the Edo period remains, and discover the renowned sweets and distinctive architecture of La Collina Omihachiman. End your journey at National Treasure Hikone Castle, where you can experience the history and culture of a historic castle town overlooking Lake Biwa.
Hachiman-bori Canal
A historic canal in Omihachiman. During the Edo period, it served as a waterway for transporting goods and supported the development of the town. Today, its atmospheric scenery of white-walled warehouses and stone-paved paths remains, making it a popular spot for experiencing one of Shiga’s most historic townscapes.
Hachiman-yama Castle Ruins
The remains of a mountain castle built by Toyotomi Hidetsugu, offering a glimpse into the history of Omi Hachiman. Located atop 271-meter-high Mt. Hachiman, the site offers panoramic views of Omi Hachiman, Lake Biwa, and Lake Nishinoko. Stone walls and other remains can still be seen today, surrounded by lush nature and spectacular views unique to Shiga.
La Collina Omihachiman
The flagship destination of Taneya, one of Shiga’s most renowned confectionery brands. Set within an expansive landscape of grass-covered buildings and lush greenery, La Collina Omihachiman offers a unique harmony of architecture and nature. Enjoy popular treats, including Club Harie’s signature baumkuchen, as well as exclusive sweets available only here.
Hikone Castle
Built in the early 17th century, Hikone Castle is a designated National Treasure of Japan. Its original keep has survived from the Edo period and stands on a hill overlooking Lake Biwa. Historic buildings and gardens remain within the grounds, offering a glimpse into the architecture and atmosphere of a traditional Japanese castle.

Day 3 Discover Sacred Islands and Scenic Views in Northern Lake Biwa
On the final day of the tour, discover the history and spectacular scenery unique to the Kohoku area. Take a boat from Nagahama Port to Chikubu Island and explore this mystical island, home to National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. Stroll through the historic streets of Kurokabe Square and enjoy its glass crafts and charming townscape, then head to Mount Shizugatake for sweeping views of Lake Biwa and Lake Yogo. From the lake and historic streets to the mountain summit, experience the diverse landscapes of Lake Biwa as you bring your journey to a memorable close.
Nagahama Port
A port on the northeastern shore of Lake Biwa and the gateway to Chikubu Island. Sightseeing boats depart and arrive here, offering visitors a chance to enjoy the magnificent scenery of Lake Biwa up close.
Chikubu Island
An island steeped in history and spiritual tradition, floating in the waters of Lake Biwa. Chikubushima is home to Hogon-ji Temple and Tsukubusuma Shrine and has long been revered as a sacred place where Buddhist and Shinto traditions meet. With National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties preserved on the island, it offers a unique opportunity to experience Shiga’s history and culture amid the beautiful scenery of Lake Biwa.
Kurokabe Square
A popular tourist district set amid the historic streets of Nagahama. Retro buildings, including the former Kurokabe Bank dating back to the Meiji period, now house glass craft shops, cafés, and boutiques. It is one of Nagahama’s signature destinations, where visitors can enjoy history, art, and local food as they explore the town.
Mount Shizugatake
A scenic viewpoint overlooking Lake Biwa and Lake Yogo. Known as the site of the historic Battle of Shizugatake during Japan’s Sengoku period, the mountain offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty. From the summit, enjoy sweeping views of Lake Biwa, reached by a scenic chairlift.
